- Title
The Balkan Deictic Systems from a Typological Perspective.
- Authors
Asenova, Petya; Guentchéva, Zlatka
- Abstract
The article discusses deixis within Balkan Slavic languages. The authors are primarily concerned with the way in which the shift from three-term deictic systems to two-term ones within these languages causes semantic changes in demonstratives, pronouns, and definite articles. Focus is given to deictic forms in the Old Bulgarian, Ancient Greek, and Modern Bulgarian languages, with particular attention paid to Bulgarian dialects spoken in the Albanian regions of Golo Bărdo and Gora. The authors explain the etymological connections between third-person pronouns, definite articles, and demonstrative pronouns across these languages.
