- Abstract
The article explores the concept of musical miscellany in early 18th-century English music, focusing on the book "The Power of Pastiche" by Alison DeSimone. DeSimone examines the role of variety and miscellany in music production during this time, including variety concerts, pasticcio operas, songbook publications, and the careers of musicians. The article challenges traditional views on the significance of miscellanies in shaping English identity and questions the claim that they contributed to England's cosmopolitan cultural identity. The author suggests that further exploration of a wider range of composers and genres is needed to fully understand the role of miscellany in English musical culture.
