The article looks into the conceptualization of citizenship education by African American educators from 1890 to 1940 through history textbooks. It explores the role of the alternative African American curriculum in the discussion of the philosophies of African American educators on citizenship education, the alternative social studies curriculum and the influence of educators Merly Epps, Edward A. Johnson and Lelia Amos in setting the tone for the alternative African American curriculum.
