- Abstract
The beginnings of experimental psychology in southern Latin America go back to the last decades of the 19th century, when the first laboratories were established in institutions dedicated to the training of the future teachers. These beginnings represent the first steps in a scientific tradition that became strong in the psychology of the continent. In Paraguay, the concepts of many authors identified with experimental research were used by local commentators, who incorporated them into their own work with varying depth degrees. However, the experimental method had a very limited assimilation. Not only the establishment of the first laboratory took place in a very late time compared with the neighboring nations, but it also found no continuity in the subsequent academic psychology. This article discusses the reasons that explain the scarce development of experimental psychology in Paraguay as well as the absence of laboratories, exploring these difficulties on historical and cultural considerations in addition to those relating to the prevailing ideas in psychology. At the end of the article, some recommendations to foster experimental research in the Paraguayan universities are offered.
