- Title
Rejoicing in the Other: France, England and the case of Major Thompson.
- Authors
Raymond, Gino
- Abstract
The article explores the joyfulness-in-difference that the characterises the fraught and fruitful relations between the French and the British. It shows how the pervasive awareness of the French self preserves a sense of French national specificity. It notes that the promotion of stereotypes that conceal equivocation and complexity affects the relishing of difference. "Les Carnets du Major Thompson," by Pierre Daninos is said to be a proleptic deconstruction of France's ambitions and of its refuges.
