- Title
Studies Probe Self-referral for Imaging.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses growing evidence which show that physicians with ownership stakes in imaging equipment are more likely to refer their patients for imaging tests than doctors who refer their patients to radiologists for independent imaging. One research reveals that ownership of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose lumbar spine problems prompts doctors to overuse it. Another study using Medicare claims data shows imaging utilization differences between physicians with and without ownership of equipment. Still, the real issue is allegedly not self-referral, but inappropriate imaging, regardless of the setting.
