- Abstract
"Bourdieu in the City: Challenging Urban Theory" by Loïc Wacquant is a book that explores the idea of Pierre Bourdieu as an urban theorist. Wacquant argues that while Bourdieu's work on distinction, social class, habitus, and symbolic capital is relevant to urban sociology, he did not fully engage with the built environment and the city itself as subjects of analysis. The book synthesizes Bourdieu's work with Wacquant's own insights and the perspectives of the Chicago School. While the book has some limitations, it provides a useful framework for applying Bourdieu's concepts to urban sociology, particularly in the areas of urban exclusion and incarceration.
