- Title
Low Skilled Immigration and Work-Fertility Tradeoffs Among High Skilled US Natives.
- Authors
Furtado, Delia; Hock, Heinrich
- Abstract
In this article, the authors argue that a weakening of the correlation between fertility and female labor force participation (FLFP) in the past 50 years in the United States can be explained by the steady flow of low skilled immigration, which increased the affordability of child rearing for high skilled U.S. natives. The article notes that this study used a statistical model that examined variations in U.S. metropolitan areas over time to assess the degree to which low skilled mostly Hispanic immigrants were related to the negative correlation between fertility and FLFP.
