- Abstract
Aysun Bademsoy is a German filmmaker born in Turkey whose documentaries explore issues of gender identity, family structures, and multi- ethnic belonging. In her acclaimed films, Bademsoy unobtrusively accompanies her subjects to their sports arenas, their workplaces, and into the privacy of their homes. By unabashedly addressing social taboos and cultural norms in her films, Bademsoy juxtaposes voices on a wide array of topics concerning Germany and Turkey that challenge dominant narratives of migration and female victimization. This interview invites Bademsoy to refl ect upon the role that gender and "hyphenated" identities play in her oeuvre, as well as upon formal characteristics of her documentaries.
