- Abstract
This article analyses the determinants of social revolts and protests in the very long term. Given the high costs of collective action in authoritarian societies (the most dominant form of political organisation throughout history), protest only tended to be activated at very specific junctures associated with processes of institutional deterioration which, in turn, could be associated with tax increases and price inflation of essential goods. Just as development has eliminated subsistence crises, consolidated democracies have found ways to channel conflict through the deployment of more transparent, fairer and less corrupt institutions. These institutions rest on a greater degree of social consensus and have developed mechanisms of concertation that channel conflict to the negotiating table.
