- Authors
Owen, Norton
- Abstract
The article discusses the lesser-known story behind the famous Jacob's Pillow dance festival held annually in Becket, Massachusetts. Jacob's Pillow, which also serves as a dance instruction institution, was established by Ted Shawn and his troupe of male dancers in the 1930s. Ted Shawn gained fame and respect in the world of dance when he and his wife, Ruth St. Denis, began a dance company in 1914 and transformed the public opinion of dance as respectable and masculine. Shawn's bi-sexuality was kept a secret for the purpose of this marriage and company.
