- Authors
Kirkland, Jacqlyn M.; Carr, Philip J.
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into educational archaeological programs for public schools, focusing on the experiences of students and visiting archaeologists at the John Will Elementary school of Mobile, Alabama. Questions are raised evaluating the effectiveness of archaeology education and public archaeological outreach programming. The authors identify several ways in which archaeology could be better integrated into elementary education and more appreciated in general public knowledge. A 2009 fourth grade outreach program is then profiled and evaluated. Conclusions are offered asserting the importance of public programming in archaeology and warning of its reduction if it is not more prominently supported.
