- Title
Don't Mess With My Gold: The Vigilantes of Montana.
- Authors
Grinder, Brian; Cooper, Dan
- Abstract
The article discusses vigilante activity in Montana, particularly in the areas of Bannack and Alder Gulch, following the discovery of gold on Grasshopper Creek in the southwestern portion of the state in 1862. It comments on the role of gold mining in the murders and lawlessness of this period. The authors examine the background of Bannack sheriff Henry Plummer and consider his execution along with his deputies Buck Stinson and Ned Ray in 1864. They note that 60 people were killed by vigilantes in the area between 1864 and 1870.
