An essay is presented which explores the depiction of brothers in 19th century English novels. Topics discussed include the family structure and relations commonly featured in these novels, the social problem involving sons addressed in the novels "Vanity Fair," by William Makepeace Thackeray and "He Knew He Was Right," by Anthony Trollope, and a comparison of marriage-related plots concerning brothers in Russian and English novels.
