- Abstract
The experience of a child submitted for planned surgery is always very individual. Anxiety, fear, tears and other reactions are well-known in our daily practice as manifestations of family separation and the hospital environment. We therefore carried out a qualitative study to understand the life experience of a school-aged child in perioperative stage of planned surgery. The sample was 30 children admitted to a surgical ward. The first group (A) received the usual hospital care. The second group (B) received a nursing intervention consisting of pre-operative preparation in the hospital on the day before the surgery. Analysis of the interview data led to the identification of eight categories: experience of the hospital, experience of the surgery, experience of the learning, experience in the operating theatre, results of the experience, feelings, role of the nurse and pediatric hospital. These categories were then analyzed in order to understand the children's messages. The results show that children who had the pre-operative nursing intervention expressed more understanding, acceptance and acknowledgment, of the surgical procedure; established a therapeutic relationship more easily with the nursing team; expressed less fear and faced the experience as a source of learning and found the presence of a relative to have a calming effect.
