- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Robben Island, South Africa where political protester and human rights activist Nelson Mandela was imprisoned as well as examining its 1999 establishment as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The 1996 establishment of a museum on and around the island is described, the memorial function of the museum is questioned, and the activities and importance of firsthand witnesses of apartheid to the museum is emphasized. The spatial and administrative separation of political and non-political prisoners is also described.
