- Abstract
"A Black Woman's West: The Life of Rose B. Gordon" by Michael K. Johnson is a biographical and historical work that explores the life of Rose Beatrice Gordon, an African American woman who lived in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. The book highlights Gordon's various roles as a writer, businesswoman, physiotherapist, and performer, shedding light on the experiences of ordinary African American women in the rural western United States during her lifetime. Johnson also provides a comprehensive account of Gordon's family history and the African American history in Montana Territory and early statehood. The book includes appendices featuring Gordon's newspaper writings and a bibliographic essay on African American women in the American West. Overall, "A Black Woman's West" offers a valuable contribution to the literary history of the US West and challenges the historical invisibility of Black women in Western history.
