- Abstract
This article responds to a previous study on the impact of trainee education on the RVU (Relative Value Unit) compensation model in head and neck surgery. The authors agree with the conclusion that resident/fellow involvement in these cases is associated with decreased RVUs, which may discourage educational efforts. However, they argue that the economic reality of surgical education is more complex and that trainees can actually lead to greater revenue. They suggest that trainees can help with running multiple operating rooms, free up attending physicians for other activities, and contribute to departmental/attending revenue through various clinical care tasks. Overall, the authors believe that the economic value of trainees in head and neck surgery should not be underestimated.
