The article presents a research on iron-sulfur as oxygen-responsive molecular switches. FNR is a global regulator of the Escherichia coli aerobic-anaerobic growth transition and depends on an iron-sulfur cluster cofactor to control its oxygen-dependent activity. Details of the chemical reaction of oxygen with the iron-sulfur cluster show how this cofactor is used for oxygen sensing.
