- Authors
Prathivadi, Pallavi; MacPherson, Naomi
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of intersectional mentoring for women in medicine. It highlights the need to address the systemic barriers that prevent women from diverse backgrounds from benefiting from traditional mentoring models. The article emphasizes the underrepresentation of women in medical leadership roles and the impact of gender differences on career progression. It suggests that intentional same-gender mentorship and intersectional approaches can attract more women to male-dominated specialties, provide meaningful role modeling, and address sensitive topics such as sexism and sexual harassment. The article concludes with recommendations for improving intersectional mentoring programs, including increased awareness of systemic exclusion, showcasing potential mentors from minority backgrounds, challenging disparities in support, and providing incentives for mentoring efforts.
