- Abstract
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a complex environment focused on reducing morbidities and comorbidities of newborns. The complexity and high incidence of comorbidities require a specialized team to meet the demands of the newborn. Among the professionals, the physiotherapist treats respiratory disorders and also prevents the neurodevelopmental delays of newborns throughout life. Thus, the present study aimed to verify whether the physiotherapeutic evaluation requested by physicians is associated with the morbidities present in the NICU. This cross-sectional, retrospective, and quantitative study analyzed the electronic medical records of live newborns and infants admitted to the NICU of a hospital in Porto Alegre/RS from January to December 2022. An association (p ˂ 0.001) was found for gestational age, prematurity, early respiratory dysfunction, syndromes, use of invasive mechanical ventilation, and continuous positive airway pressure. The findings suggest that some morbidities are being used as medical criteria to request physiotherapeutic evaluation.
