- Abstract
The alliance of futures studies and foresight as a practice of social intervention and decision-making suggests the potential of both disciplines as tools to produce future scenarios that strengthen sustainability in rural areas. This document presents a methodological proposal built from a focus on complex adaptive socio-environmental systems, fulfilling three processes: (i) modeling of the complex system, (ii) production of a base scenario with a socio-environmental approach, and (iii) production and analysis of desirable futures scenarios. The model obtains and manages key information provided by rural inhabitants and experts through dynamics that recover serious games structures in order to promote participatory ideation and feeding data to the SAMSPE indicator system. Results of its application in different regions of Mexico are presented, analyzing its usefulness in highly marginalized rural communities that inhabit vulnerable ecosystems, concluding that participatory futures models contribute to the sustainability of their development.
