- Abstract
The health of older persons can be assessed according to their functional capacity, which describes the ability to independently plan and perform basic, instrumental and advanced activities of daily living. The purpose of the study was to analyse the functional capacity of healthy adults aged 65 and over, living in their home environment. The objectives of the research were (i) to design and test instruments that adequately measure functional capacity and perception of older adults' social inclusion among the elderly, and (ii) to study relationships between variables functional capacity, perceptions of social inclusion and demographic characteristics (gender, education). The research was exploratory in nature. A non-experimental quantitative study was carried out, which included 168 people aged 65 and over living in the home environment. Data collection was performed with the survey technique. Questions of functional capacity and social inclusion were designed as an upgrade of the existing instruments, taking into account the needs of nursing and other professions working with older persons. The analysis confirmed the three-dimensional structure of basic, advanced and instrumental activities of daily living. The correlational analysis between three dimensions of functional capacity demonstrated the independence of advanced activities of daily living from the dimensions of basic and instrumental activities. Study results showed, that the majority of older participants was independently performing basic and instrumental activities of daily living but they needed help in activities such as reading and understanding medical reports, instructions for medical interventions and medication, and with writing applications and filling administrative forms. The research also confirmed the relation between autonomy in performing basic and instrumental activities of daily living and the perception of social inclusion, which is an important element of old age loneliness prevention. The designed instruments need to be upgraded, improved and validated on a larger sample of older persons.
