- Abstract
The article explores the xiqu or Chinese adaptations of Western drama. It offers information on Zhuli xiaojie, a series of experimental xiqu performances by playwrights William Huizhu Sun and Faye Chunfang Fei including "Xin bi tian gao," an all-female adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler." The differences between xiqu and naturalistic theatre are discussed. Also mentioned is the need to make extended verbal development of themes due to limited dialogue in xiqu.
