- Title
Tactical Formalism: A Response to Caroline Levine.
- Authors
Tucker, Herbert F.
- Abstract
The author examines the essay "Strategic Formalism: Toward a New Method in Cultural Studies," by Caroline Levine that was published in the "Victorian Studies." He encourages people to be relaxed on the taboo on formalism that was instituted by advocates struggling to legitimize the historical and cultural meanings of literary inquiry. He says that poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning had employed an exceptionally confrontational prosody in her poem "The Cry of the Children" which made readers wanting to have some help with it.
