- Abstract
In this study, a unique SiOCN ceramic coating with exceptional compliance has been developed using perhydropolysilazane and polysiloxane preceramic polymers. The coating layers are defect-free and smooth with < 42 nm average surface roughness. The inter-diffusion of Si, C, and N further enhances the coating integration. The SiOCN coating has a hardness of 6.3 ± 0.7 GPa and shows plastic deformation. With repeated thermal quenching, the SiOCN hybrid coating stays intact and demonstrates a compliant deformation behavior, which has never been observed for polymer-derived ceramic coatings. This coating has great potential in corrosion prevention of steel substrates in different harsh environments, especially for nuclear waste storage canisters.
