- Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Brain death is the legal definition of death. It is the complete and irreversible cessation of all brain functions. The time between diagnosis, the family's decision to donate an organ and organ collection is decisive in making organ donation and transplantation viable. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To study the difficulties encountered in the process of diagnosing brain death in the ICU and its consequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a bibliographic study that examines brain death and its implications for medicine and organ donation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Studies on brain death highlight variations in incidence and the need for consistent protocols. The participation of specialist nurses increases organ donations. Identifying symptoms early is crucial to improving the success of transplants. CONCLUSION: In summary, the studies reveal challenges in the management of brain death, highlighting the importance of standardization, training and involvement of health professionals. The support of experts and public awareness is essential to saving lives through organ donation.
