- Abstract
If the differentiation in musical tastes, once structured by the opposition in the "scholar" and "popular" distinction, now seems to depend more on a gradient of diversity of preferences, this evolution may refer less to an "averaging" of tastes than a reorganizing of the standard of cultural legitimacy. The eclecticism of taste is indeed seen as the attribute of the educated upper classes and in the latter, familiarity with scholarly knowledge is all the more strong that the endowment of educational capital is combined with a middle or upper social background rather than popular. These changes alter the relations of symbolic domination in the space of musical tastes without necessarily reducing its significance.
