- Abstract
Malaysia is fortunate that the unique mangrove forests were the first to be protected under the law and gazetted as Forest Reserves as early as in 1902. The entire area of Matang mangroves in Perak was gazetted by 1906. Similar actions were taken for Klang mangroves in Selangor in 1904 and later for Johor mangroves. By 1951, a total of 84,109 ha of mangrove forests had been gazetted in Perak, Selangor, Kedah and Johor which constituted 93.8% of the total mangrove forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. By 1908, the whole Matang mangroves had been systematically managed under a working plan. The working plan was subsequently revised and updated regularly for over a century. In this regard, Matang mangroves have been recognised as the best managed mangrove forests in the world. Similarly, Klang mangroves working plan began in 1922 and Johor mangroves in 1941. The historical evolution of management, conservation and protection of these mangroves were examined and discussed. The success factors for the long tradition of sustainable management of mangrove forests were also highlighted.
