- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease through its physiopathological mechanisms of appearance, but also through its acute and chronic complications. The high incidence of this condition in the general population, along with the prescription for the ajuvant treatment of different phytotherapeutic agents by specialists were the bases of this bibliographic study. Phytotherapy provides now many therapeutic opportunities, correlated with the multitude of biologically active compounds that can induce beneficial effects in the treatment of diabetes. Phytocomplexes from medicinal herbs have hypoglycemic, hypolipemiant and antiradicalar effects. The most representative natural compounds that develop beneficial effects in the treatment of diabetes mellitus are phenolcarboxylic acids, cummarinic and flavonoid derivatives, antocianosides, proantocianosides, tannins, triterpenoid saponins, tioheterosides, essential oils, bitter principles and carotenoids.
