- Abstract
The introduction of public opinion surveys in underdeveloped countries is, of course, only one aspect of a general problem, namely, that of bringing modem techniques, evolved elsewhere, into countries hitherto untouched by them. Needless to say, the difficulties involved, not merely material and psychological but also cultural and social in character, are great. But they are further increased by the fact that these surveys are, first and foremost, a means of investigation and that the subject of study is people themselves. Thing now is to show how it is that this work can be done and, even more, to draw attention to the obstacles that are encountered, the means that are employed to overcome them and the value of the results that have already been achieved or that may be anticipated. This is the purpose of various articles published in the January 1963 issue of "International Social Science Journal." They are by different authors who did not consult one another, and whose points of view are not necessarily the same. Certain divergences are therefore to be expected but they concern details only and the general impression derived from reading these articles is, on the contrary, that of a very large measure of agreement.
