- Abstract
In the summer of 1992, a list of 4.500 regis‐ tered unofficial employees (IM) of the Secret Service of the former GDR (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit der DDR) was published in Halle an der Saale. On the basis of these events, the reappraisal of GDR history in terms of dealing with guilt is examined. Within the framework of problem-centred interviews, citi‐ zens of Halle were questioned about their opinion on the publication of the list and their reflections on the subject of guilt in the SED dictatorship. The respondents have very similar views about culpable behaviour. However, whether they generally consider collaborating with the secret service as culpable depends largely on their own entanglements. The opinions of how much guilt the SED dictatorship bears as a system also differ greatly among the par‐ ticipants. However, assuming that the system is to blame does not mean that individuals are supposedly less responsible for their actions. The preconditions for entering into dialogue with the supposed »ene‐ my« differed considerably. At the same time, such events from the period of post-reunified Germany, in which the categories of perpetrator and victim are ambiguous, offer an ideal starting point for talk‐ ing with contemporary witnesses about the complex subject of guilt.
