- Abstract
This paper is a piece of primary research into a BBC initiative called Voices, which ran across BBC Local Radio and national stations in 2003 involving 58 producers working with local communities in 48 locations across the United Kingdom. The research explores the extent to which the projects matched the aims and objectives of the BBC's Connecting Communities strategy and facilitated a closer relationship between local stations and the audience. The material for the evaluation of Voices comes from original research groups which took place in three of the Voices projects carried out by BBC Local Radio stations – Radio Shropshire's Woodside Project, the Rotherham Voices project run by Radio Sheffield and BBC London 94.9's project in East Ham – and is set in the context of the BBC's historical role in local broadcasting.
