- Abstract
The essay discusses the use of illustrations drawn by African American graphic artist Albert Alexander Smith and published within the "Crisis" and "Opportunity" magazines depicting the "repoussoir" technique. Smith's biography is discussed as it pertains to the development of his artwork. Public discourse through the publications of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Urban League, and philosopher Alain Locke is described.
