The author focuses on various events that happened in the U.S. in the 1960s that created certain problems for education and the influence of professor O. L. Davis Jr. in her life. She relates her experience of attending a master's degree program at Kent State University in Ohio, in which Davis was her teacher. She notes that Davis helped his doctoral students how to be scholars. She cites that Davis engaged his students in critical thought.
