- Title
THE DISTRIBUTION OF WOODLAND ISOPODS.
- Authors
Le Gay Brereton, John
- Abstract
The article cites a study to determine the distribution of woodland isopods during day-night and seasonal changes. It was desired to know whether the isopods lived in separate parts of the forest, and whether any interaction occurred between species. It was also hoped that a detailed study would throw light on the structure and distribution of breeding units within species and of how much interchange between such units there might be. The woodlice are a particularly interesting group for they alone of the Crustacea are fully adapted to life on land, and because in those habitats where they are found as a natural element of the fauna, they make up a large and probably important part. Of the isopoda, it is the oniscoidea which have become terrestrial, and within the group considerable difference exists in the capacity to withstand dryness. In general, the Ligiidae live in the zone between aquatic and terrestrial life, for example the intertidal zone, or the fringes of fresh water habitats.
