- Abstract
Many incidents that happened in history arose from policies of empires; because the policy of border expansion with the imperial system was implemented, and this caused many empires to fight each other. Correspondingly, the Ottoman and Russian empires can be mentioned. Russia, which was influential in the north, commenced to implement the policy of expanding its borders the to south by capturing Kazan, the centre of the Khanate of Kazan, and carried out many intermittent wars with Ottomans for centuries, which was in the south. The Ottoman Empire, which became a great power from the Caucasus to the Balkans, from the Middle East to Africa, prevented this policy of Russia to a large extent. However, in the 19th century, the wars that Ottomans had against European powers and Russia were severer than those in the past. Especially in the wars in the Balkans region, Russia and Ottomans confronted generally. For this reason, Russia's greatest challenge was the presence of a powerful Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. In addition to this, the spread of colonialism by the Europeans was also observed as an important process. Consequently, the Ottomans fought not only with Russia, but also with the colonialist European empires. The Ottoman Empire, which was influential in many parts of Africa, especially in the northern part of Africa, was able to prevent the colonialists from entering this continent for many years. Yet, the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878 led to a change in the balance in both the Balkans and Africa. Seeing the war as an opportunity, Colonist Europeans held the African Conference in Berlin in 1884-1885 and started to share the continent. In this context, the article examines how the colonialists, who observed the weakened Ottoman Empire in the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War, shared and colonized the African continent.
