The creative industries have been increasingly important to economic well-being in many countries such as England and Korea. Japan also promotes cultivation of creative industries and overseas advancement of an internationally appreciated Cool Japan brand. Japan has a great number of traditional craft products that are manufactured with traditional methods and materials and are part of creative industries. However, the domestic markets for traditional craft products have decreased in recent years. This paper empirically investigates the recent state of the Japanese lacquerware industry, using data from the Census of Manufactures of Japan, from the viewpoint of industrial policy.
