- Abstract
This article explores the relationship between Chinese and White communities in Depression-era Utah, focusing on the positive interactions and reciprocity between Chinese immigrants and their neighbors. It discusses the economic interactions between the two groups, such as Chinese-owned laundries, and the lack of sustained efforts by White Latter-day Saints to proselytize to the Chinese population. The article also addresses the racism and discrimination faced by Chinese Americans in Utah, including exclusionary immigration laws and restricted access to spaces. It highlights the neighborly friendship between the Ju and Soderborg families, which defied racial hierarchies and segregation, and emphasizes the power dynamics and reciprocal relationships that can exist between individuals and families, even in the face of structural inequities and discrimination.
