- Title
CULTURAL IMAGES AND THE HEALTH OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN.
- Authors
HILL, SHIRLEY A.
- Abstract
In this article the author argues that social and structural inequalities in the U.S. produce cultural images that contribute to poor health outcomes for African American women. She notes that the Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS), an international organization of social scientists, has focused on universal access to health care as its primary policy initiative. She suggests that while universal access to health care is important, it will do little to diminish health inequities, and holds that emphasis must be placed on closing gender, race, and class gaps.
