- Abstract
The article presents information about toxins from blue-green algae. Toxic algae are found in all aquatic environments and are responsible occasionally for the death of fish, livestock, waterfowl and humans. All of the poisonous algae have been divided into three categories: the dinoflagellates (Pyrrhophyta), phytoflagellates (Chrysophyta) and blue-green algae (Cyanophyta). The effects of toxic blooms of bluegreen algae have been felt several times. One of the most serious outbreaks of blue-green algal poisonings on record occurred in late 1952 at Storm Lake, Iowa, where blooms of a nabaena flos-aquae accounted for the estimated loss of thousands of waterfowl and numerous wildlife.
