- Abstract
This article focuses on the chronology of enclosure of open fields in parts of Medieval Devon in England. Marked inter-regional contrasts in the history of enclosure are revealed, which were a function of regional differences in medieval economic development. Places for which evidence has been found of subdivided arable fields in medieval sources, largely deeds and extents dating from the thirteenth century and early fourteenth. Nevertheless, since every effort was made to cover sources from manors in all parts of the county. The distribution indicates that subdivided arable fields were not found in all parts of medieval Devon. If they ever had been found throughout the county, there were many regions from which they had almost entirely disappeared by the thirteenth century. Concentrations of places with subdivided arable fields were to be found within only two regions. Firstly, subdivided arable was associated with numerous villages in the vales of east Devon. Secondly, there were also numerous villages with subdivided arable fields in south Devon.
