- Abstract
Despite past efforts, there are few studies about the internationalization of firms in developing countries, are also rare and are dealing with the continued stay of companies in foreign markets. This article seeks to minimize the lack of studies in the area to focus on the research stage of growth and consolidation that followed the entry into the foreign market. It aims to describe and analyze how the consolidation occurred in the foreign market for Brazilian companies that made heavy construction direct investment abroad. The procedures were classified as descriptive conclusive research and data collection was performed under a qualitative orientation. We conducted a multiple case study in four large Brazilian construction companies: Andrade Gutierrez, Mendes Junior, Norberto Odebrecht and Queiroz Galvão. Noting the argument multidimensionality of the phenomenon, we propose a theoretical model with four levels of analysis: macro context, institutional environment, industry and firm. The results indicate that consolidation in the international markets was mainly due to factors related to strategic management, the response to institutional processes and the adaptation to competitive conditions in the industry.
