- Abstract
A study on the contemporary society was meant to signal, among other things, the impasse currently reached by the written culture and book reading, which allow everyone's access to information, knowledge and lifelong learning: research conducted by the Romanian Institute of Social Studies (RISS) revealed that in Romania "more than half of the Romanians did not read any books in 2012". In this respect, there are numerous ways that Romanian or foreign libraries (confronted with the invasion, more and more difficult to control, of media and computerization development), use trying to revive the interest in printed, traditional books and to promote reading, to bring, especially among the youth (suddenly overwhelmed by the Internet, iPads and smartphones), extra confidence in and respect for the library - one of the most representative institutions of society. The author lists some of these approaches: art workshops, reading clubs, meetings with book authors, cultural programmes such as "the babbling book", "the street library", "the nomad book", "the reading cabaret", writing competitions, book or poetry festivals, etc. organized in Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, Russia. In Romania there are projects such as "The National Library Week", "The International Day of Children's Books", "Late Night Library", "In the World of Books", "The Animated World of Stories" or reading rooms dedicated exclusively to children and young people (at the National Library of Romania).
