- Abstract
With the introduction of the Web 2.0 technologies the consumer became the creator, making use of different modes for self expression. The genre of comics in the hands of the common people on different Internet platforms creatively took new directions giving them the freedom to talk and explore issues related to them. Platforms like Facebook gave Pakistani webcomic artists a chance to express themselves on a variety of issues from marriage to politics. For the current research sixteen web comics have been selected from five official Facebook pages of Pakistani artists. The research aims to explore how young girls and women are represented in the webcomics in relation to the society, their families and in terms of creating awareness on their issues. Analysis of the selected webcomics reveals girls/young women to be represented as silent, naive and submissive, valued for their looks and looked upon as a commodity in the marriage market, with marriage being their ultimate destiny. The artists have used the medium not only to criticise different social practices but also to create awareness about issues such as blackmail and dowry.
