- Abstract
This discussion reviews gastrointestinal (GI) features of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that erupted into a global pandemic after being identified in Wuhan, China in December of 2019. Along with cardiopulmonary manifestations, gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations are among the most common. The mechanism of action of this virus in the GI tract are considered followed by current concepts of clinical manifestations of COVID-19 in the GI tract. Also covered are concepts of COVID-19 and the liver as well as the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). In children the mortality for SARS-CoV-2 infection including that for MIS-C is low although the long-term effects are not fully known yet.
