- Abstract
One of the prerequisites for sustainable development is the protection of biodiversity. Conservation of biodiversity is one of the major environmental priorities of the European Union. One of the European biodiversity indicators is given by the areas covered by the protected areas. In this context, the article analyzes the distribution of the protected area categories as well as the evolution of the areas occupied by the protected areas. Excessive exploitation of forests and rivers, damages the development of natural habitats. Through certain activities, people contribute to biodiversity loss and increased pollution. Regional development can only be done if it is based on actions to conserve biodiversity and reduce environmental pollution. People's well-being can also be improved by preserving biodiversity. In this context, the article presents an analysis of the population in Romania, depending on the activities of the national economy.
