- Abstract
The essay discusses the Jewish response to the Byzantine Empire's rule from the ninth through the 11th centuries in the communities of southern Italy. Sections of rabbinical literature including the Midrash's aggadat bereshit, Sepher Yosippon, and Megillat Ahimaaz are mentioned. The discussion focuses on the Second Temple Period of Jewish history and the Byzantine Orthodox Christian theological polemics that influenced Jewish identity. Discussion topics also include the Jewish interpretation of Jesus Christ and the convergence of Roman and Jewish history.
