- Abstract
The Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) has established itself in the psychodynamic field as a supplement to descriptive classification systems for mental disorders. In addition to an axis on experience of illness and prerequisites for treatment, the axes interpersonal relations, conflict and structure capture various psychodynamic explanations of a patient's mental disorder. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate how OPD can enrich and deepen the descriptive diagnosis of a personality disorder. For this purpose, the OPD axes are presented and connections with personality disorders are explained. In addition, we describe two case examples that were diagnosed with the same three personality disorders according to DSM-IV but show different relationship patterns, intrapsychic conflicts and structural impairments. In this way, the additional value of OPD for understanding the disorders as well as for indication and treatment planning becomes clear.
