- Abstract
This article discusses research by the biotechnology companies Cytos Biotechnology AG and Protherics PLC into vaccines that treat hypertension as an immunologic disorder. The Protherics medication uses an angiotensin I hormone peptide analog in combination with the adjuvant keyhole limpet hemocyanin to spur an immune response to that hormone. Cytos uses Q β virus analogs in conjunction with angiotensin II hormone antigens to trigger an immune response that limits hypertensive effects. The possibility that one of these vaccines will harm patients because it inhibits normal hormonal responses to environmental stressors is considered.
